On January 15, 2022 a massive eruption and tsunami hit Tonga causing catastrophic damage, with homes destroyed and many communities covered in a thick layer of ash.  Communications were entirely cut off.

The country was in desperate need of urgent help and M Group was committed to getting vital supplies to the Tonga people.  Donors from all over the world offered their help and resources to contribute to the huge cleanup job.

M Group was commissioned by HTS to carry out the program.  After 2 years of planning, prepraring, and executing, the 3 stage program was successfully completed on time and on budget.

Aid Program plan – 3 stages (completed)

Immediate needs

  • Food, water and urgent supplies were sent to Tonga immediately.
  • This was done using the 12 containers the New Zealand Government has arranged from Auckland, New Zealand.
  • M Group team and volunteers in Auckland co-ordinated and arranged all the supplies.

Immediate Repair & Cleaning supplies

  • M Group commissioned their own container/s
  • Additional food, water and urgent supplies sent to villages and families
  • Cleaning and repair materials were urgently sent
  • Portable Generators, power supplies, other urgent essentials

Infrastructure for Communities

  • Fishing boats were donated to the most needy villages
  • Fresh clean drinking water towers were given to schools and villages on Tongatapu
  • Essential hospital equipment was provided to Eua hospital
  • Portable sawmill given to the community of Eua

M Group Team contributions

As with the COVID 19 Hardship Donation program and the Project Cyclone Gita rebuild, M Group managed the aid program on behalf of Donors.

Our Management team has extensive experience in project management and our on-ground team worked directly on the frontline to ensure all supplies were used in the most effective manner possible.

The aid program was fully documented and reported.
